Description

The Whitehorse Spillway (WHS) was built in 1958 and forms an integral part of the Whitehorse Dam. The WHS stoplog crane was built in 1958 and serves the purpose of installing and removing the stoplogs from the Whitehorse spillway gates. There are ten stoplogs that are placed upstream of the spillway gates. One spillway gate can be isolated at a time and requires all ten stoplogs. The stoplogs hold back Schwatka Lake so the spillway gates can be operated as required for testing, inspection and maintenance activities. The stoplogs also allow workers to enter the spillway to perform maintenance work on the spillway and spillway gates. The stoplog crane and ten stoplogs are stored to the east of the two spillway bays. The stoplog crane runs on a monorail that spans the two spillway bays and the storage area.

The last recorded operation of the stoplog crane to install the stoplogs was in 2013. Annual inspections have been completed by certified crane technicians every year and numerous safety and reliability issues have been identified in recent inspections. In 2021, YEC and their Owner’s Engineer, Klohn Crippen Berger (KCB), undertook a detailed assessment of the stoplog crane. YEC has decided to replace the crane.

The goals of this project are to:

Replace the end-of-life WHS stoplog crane and its controls with a modern, improved design to increase the safety, reliability, and functionality of the crane operation.
Remove and dispose of existing end-of-life crane components.
Complete commissioning of the new crane by October 31, 2023 at the latest.
Complete the work with zero safety or environmental incidents.
