Procuring Entity: The University of Toronto
Address:
University of Toronto
Procurement Services
215 Huron St, 2nd floor
Toronto, Ontario
Canada, M5S 1A2
Description:
In 2011, the University developed a digital maps platform – http://map.utoronto.ca. This tool integrated and replaced multiple versions of online campus maps that featured different areas and services at U of T. An in-house, cross-department staff project designed, developed and launched the site.
The maps website is powered by Google’s map data and includes all major building locations on the three campuses. The site uses layers to present a variety of services from accessibility to wireless and student services. It allows for decentralized content updates.
The maps tool has been popular: in 2016, the map was viewed more than 880,000 times. It is also being used increasingly on mobile devices.
The maps tool has served the community well. But given the vast advances in digital technology in campus maps, U of T requires a new generation of digital maps – and the ability for internal digital staff to update the maps.
The University’s large internal and external community requires effective wayfinding tools using the latest in digital technology and applications.
In addition to the maps, the University’s student recruitment team also requires a “virtual tour” component. This will be part of the maps package, but can also be used by the student recruitment team separately. The virtual tour will be effective in providing prospective students and their families with the ability to see various highlights of the University’s three campuses from anywhere in the world. The virtual tour capability would also enable the University to create tours of specific, temporary events (such as a walking tour of historical landmarks related to the Canada 150 anniversary).
