Description

1. 1. This Request for Quote (“RFQ”) is an invitation to prospective Proponents to submit Quotes for the provision of Telemetry for Neurochemical Mechanisms in Depression & Cognition, including installation and on-site training.

1. 1. Exposure to stress during puberty can have long-lasting consequences on brain processing, behavior, and future response to stressors, including immune challenges. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a bacterial endotoxin and a component of the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria. Intraperitoneal administration of LPS mimics the effects of bacterial infections by binding to and activating Toll-like receptor 4 on immune cells and the subsequent cellular cascade leads to the production of cytokines (pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory), cyclooxygenase-2, and prostaglandins (PGE2) in the periphery. PGE2 cross the blood brain barrier to act on specific brain regions: Vascular Organ of the Lamina Terminalis and Ventromedial Preoptic area of the Hypothalamus, causing cutaneous vasoconstriction, reduction of sweating, and increased heat production from metabolism of brown adipose tissue. The culmination of these events results in the display of particular sickness-related behaviors, and changes in body temperature and locomotor activity. With the requested telemetry system, we will be able to measure changes in body temperature and locomotor activity in an enduring and objective manner.

1. 1. General Description:

1. 1. 1. The E-Mitter Telemetry System requested allows continuously monitor temperature, heart rate and gross motor activity in mice, while the animal is housed in its cage freely. The implantable transponder operates without batteries and can be implanted for up to 2 years. This eliminates experimental downtime and the risk of surgery due to explanation and re-implantation required for battery maintenance. An external energizer placed under the cage will power the implanted transponder wirelessly, and at the same time, the energizer will record the telemetry data from the implant.

Should any instrument included in a Quote be superseded by a newer model during the period of time between the award of contract and the delivery date, the successful Proponent will be required to inform the University of Ottawa of the new specifications, the newer model pricing will remain the same as what was offered in the RFQ. At its sole discretion, the University of Ottawa may opt to make changes from the list of instruments by altering, adding, or deducting some instruments.
