Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC) serves a population of 44,000 people spread across 33 communities and 1.35M square km (1.18Mkm2 land) in one of the most challenging utility operating environments in the world. The North and South Slave power systems are primarily supplied by hydro generation with backup diesel generation and connected to large transmission networks operated by NTPC’s System Control Operators. The North Slave System is comprised of two hydro systems on two rivers, the Snare and Bluefish Hydro systems which provide power to Yellowknife, Behchoko and Dettah with backup diesel generation at each site. The South Slave system is comprised of one hydro system and provides power to Fort Smith, Hay River, Hay River Reserve, Fort Resolution and Enterprise with backup diesel generation at each site. The Taltson system is comprised of one hydro plant (Taltson Hydro Plant) on the Taltson River and is connected to the South Slave communities by 200 km of transmission lines.
