Description:
The Department of Materials Science & Engineering requires a Nano-indentation Mechanical System that can be used to perform nano-mechanical measurements of mechanical properties on a wide range of materials, inside as well as outside SEM.
The equipment should enable nano-indentation and in-situ mechanical testing of materials such as thin films, ceramics, polymers, metals, pillars and cantilevers using both quasi-static and dynamic nano-indentation techniques with high spatial resolution. This mechanical testing device should be operable inside a scanning electron microscope so that imaging can be completed during testing and also operable on a laboratory benchtop so that testing can be completed when the SEM is being used for other purposes. The system should provide automated sequential testing of multiple tests without user interaction after initial loading and setting up test locations. The system should have easy to use test and review software that enables easy training for new users. Stability in instrument operation and calibration is critical and electromagnetic actuation combined with decoupled force and displacement measurement sensors provide this level of required long term stability.
The end users should not have to recalibrate either force or displacement on a regular basis through air indents as is typically required on electrostatically based actuators. In addition, the mechanical testing system should have interchangeable tips that can be changed by the user, so that flexibility in research applications and tip geometries for the applications can be optimized and selected by the researcher.
