TORONTO PEARSON WORKFORCE DEMOGRAPHIC STUDY
AT
TORONTO PEARSON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) is a corporation without share capital. Among its responsibilities are the management, operation and maintenance of Toronto Pearson International Airport.
BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT
Over the course of the next 20 years, regional and international passenger travel demand may require Toronto Pearson to accommodate upwards of 80 million annual passengers. Anticipating the workforce needs to support this growth is essential and as well as to maintain this airport as a great place to work.
The Airport is a, multi-employer, multi-union environment. There are, more than 300 employers, 49,000 employees represented by various unions, each with different employment relationships and governed by different legislative frameworks (Federal and Provincial). Employers include airport service providers, retail partners, airline and agency partners, to name a few, and all have a role in ensuring Toronto Pearson is a great place to work.
STUDY OBJECTIVES
The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) wishes to undertake an Airport Employee Demographic Study (Study) to better understand the current airport employee profile at Toronto Pearson.
The information provided through the Study will provide a profile of the current workforce at Toronto Pearson, including base demographic information, information on employment arrangements and commuting patterns. Additional detail on information to be included is provided below under Study Requirements.
This baseline reference information will serve as input for internal and external stakeholders and input for subsequent separate work to:
- Identify future labour market projections for the next 25 years and identify emerging skills gaps and future labour market supply;
- Support future planning and programming for the airport’s labour market development as Toronto Pearson grows to serve the local, regional and national economies; and
- Identify opportunities for GTAA to make investments and effect economic and social impact benefits from growth at Toronto Pearson.
As well, future updates to the baseline information would be undertaken periodically and accordingly the survey will need to be structured to facilitate future comparisons.
GTAA will establish a multi-stakeholder Advisory Steering Committee to oversee the Study to:
- Inform the data request to ensure the data collected will be of use to all study stakeholders;
- Provide advice and expertise to the Study consultant; and
- Advocate for their stakeholder constituency’s interest in a transparent way, having regard for the study objectives and future uses of the data.
The Committee shall include representatives from GTAA, unions/labour, government, industry, academics, and the community.
