The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) seeks to investigate its role in watershed governance
with the primary intent and goal to protect watersheds where consumptive water sources are at risk.
Consideration must be given to how to best serve the needs of the communities, agencies and
overarching interests involved. The Regional Watershed Governance Initiative is an opportunity to
collaboratively increase leverage and influence on multi-levels of decision making; expand on the
ground effectiveness; and influence the existing provincial structures that guide resource
management.
The first step in the multi-step development of a Regional Watershed Governance Initiative is to
conduct a Scoping Study. The Scoping Study will produce 2 significant outcomes – first, guidance
based on lessons learned and best management practices from other jurisdictions, to the RDCK Staff
and Elected Officials on how best to proceed with the Watershed Governance Initiative and second,
immediate engagement with 6 diverse watersheds that are facing challenges to protecting
consumptive water sources. These studies will inform the recommendations produced through the
Study for consideration by the RDCK.
