Description:
The Atkinson College complex is located at 96 The Pond Road, at York University’s Keele Campus’ southern block, in close proximity to the Central Square hub, Scott Library and the TTC bus route. Atkinson has been associated with part-time adult education in Canada and opened its doors officially in 1967, as an institution geared solely for this task. The College has now amalgamated with the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies (LA&PS) and houses the following departments under this umbrella: Faculty and Administrative Offices for the Departments of Anthropology, Economics, English, Equity Studies, History, Humanities, Social Science & Sociology, the School of Administrative Studies, and Human Resource Management.
The Atkinson College complex, is heritage listed among the City of Toronto Inventory of Heritage Properties for its cultural heritage value, the City of North York also recognized Atkinson College on its North York Modern Inventory.
Atkinson College is also historically linked to the development of adult education in Canada.
Atkinson College is now part of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies. The Atkinson tower is part of this complex and was built in 1971 and currently houses different faculty administrative offices.
-The proposed renovations comprise of four (4) floors totaling a GFA of approx. 18,340 sf. Each of the floors, 4th to the 7th to be renovated is approximately 4,585 sf.
The Atkinson College complex is included in the City of Toronto’s Inventory of Heritage Properties.
The nature of the work related to the interior renovations in our view does not impact the heritage attributes, however review by the Heritage Department at the City of Toronto will be required.
The Program will consolidate the English Department administrative offices into 4 floors; it will also accommodate some students’ organizations and union offices. The Design of the interiors should consider access to daylight and exterior views. Natural daylight should be considered in all spaces including the central core. Sustainable and natural materials are highly encouraged to be part of the interior choice of products, components and materials.
