UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO - NOTICE OF INTENT TO AWARD A SINGLE SOURCE CONTRACT: 19-098
Bundle Process 11 (Micro Twin Screw Extruder) and HAAKE MiniJet Pro (Micro Injection Molding)
The University of Waterloo (UW) intends to award a single source contract to Spectra Research Corporation (‘SRC’) of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, for the purchase of a used (demonstration model) Benchtop Rheology Compounder system for research purposes. The budget for this entire package is approximately $200,000 CAD, not including tax/HST.
This is an Advanced Notice indicating to the supplier community that UW intends to award a contract for this equipment to a pre-identified supplier. If no other supplier submits, on or before the closing date of this notice, a statement of specifications that satisfies the stated requirements set out in this Notice, the competitive requirements of the University are considered to have been met. Following notification to any suppliers not successful in demonstrating that their statement of specifications meets the requirements set out in this Notice, the contract may then be awarded to the pre-identified supplier.
If other potential suppliers submit statements of specifications during the fifteen calendar day posting period, and meet the requirements set out in this Notice, UW will proceed to a Request for Proposal process, in order to award the contract.
Process - Suppliers who can provide equivalent equipment with proven functionality required for the research, within budget, are encouraged to submit a statement of specifications, in writing, to the contact person identified in this Notice on or before the closing date of this Notice. The statement of specifications must unequivocally demonstrate how the supplier meets these advertised requirements within budget.
SPECIFICATIONS –
The required system includes a bench-top, parallel twin screw extruder with diameter ≤ 11mm with 40:1 L/D Ratio that can process PVC, MDPE, PA, PET, PP, EMA, EVA, EAA and PS, and:
- Integrated electronics
- Segmented screw design
- Able to accept standard polyolefin pellets ≤ 4mm in diameter
- Scalable to larger extruders with a Da/Di ration of 1.73.
- Compatible with wide range of feeders including rototube, single and twin screw
- Compatible with liquid feeders.
- Compact size - 820x480x410 mm.
- Light weight for portability ≈ 60 kg
- Extruder design should allow for convenient placement of feeders - either on top of the gear box, behind the extruder barrel, or in front of the extruder barrel
- Screw configuration software to optimize extrusion process and to coincide with feeding locations
- Extruder/screw adjustable to reduce the L/D ratio from 40 to less than 30:1 to reduce residence time for processing heat sensitive material
- Post extrusion equipment available to produce a mono-filament fiber
- Post-extrusion equipment with water bath with pelletizer
- Allows for direct filling of a future MinJet micro injection molding system direct from the melt in the extruder.
The demonstration system available from SRC includes:
Process 11 (Micro Twin Screw Extruder), Compact parallel co-rotating 11 mm twin screw extruder
HAAKE MiniJet Pro injection molding machine, with mould
And, installation, service and support are provided direct from the manufacturer.
SOLE SOURCE JUSTIFICATION
Although other benchtop compounder equipment meeting the specifications is available, there is no suitable system within the $200,000 CAD budget cap. To our knowledge, there is currently no other used/demonstration system available for competitive comparison.
