Background
The Centre for Advanced Materials Joining deals with the analysis of a wide range of welding processes (friction stir, laser, arc, plasma) and materials (ferrous, non-ferrous), in order to improve joining quality and productivity. There has been a greater need for development of welding methods which involve friction stir welding, including for alloys of aluminum, magnesium, steels, titanium and nickel alloys.
The required infrastructure will should incorporate a friction stir welding tool and spindle in a complete system that is capable of welding a wide range of metals. The system will require force feedback in order to ensure repeatability, and offer high precision at high force capacities during welding in one linear direction. Fixtures for securing a wide range of workpiece sizes in both lap and butt welding joint configurations should be incorporated. Additional features such as temperature monitoring or feedback, along with options to add material during welding are considered added value capabilities.
The budget cap for this purchase is $500,000 CAD, not including HST.
