Description

As part of its efforts to become one of the most innovative universities in the world, Waterloo has committed to addressing important local and global sustainability challenges through its teaching, research, operations, and engagement. Waterloo holds a leadership role across Canada and globally on taking action on sustainability, as evidenced by the following:

Largest and most programmatically diverse Faculty of Environment of its kind in Canada
Host of the Canadian chapter of the Global Sustainable Development Solutions Network
Host to multiple interdisciplinary sustainability-related research institutes, including the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy, Interdisciplinary Centre on Climate Change, and the Water Institute
Signatory of the Council of Ontario Universities “Going Greener” pledge (2009)
Ranked 13th in the world in the Global Impact Rankings, developed by Times Higher Education (2019)
Recipient of the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (STARS) Silver rating by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (2018)
Recipient of 3 local awards for community engagement in sustainability between 2016-2018
Member, sponsor, and Pledging Partner of the Regional Sustainability Initiative, led by Sustainable Waterloo Region
Member of the TravelWise program, led by Sustainable Waterloo Region and the Region of Waterloo

Waterloo’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy (ESS) outlines the institution’s approach to integrate sustainability within its academic mission, operational practice, and campus and community engagement activities. The ESS was developed by the President’s Advisory Committee on Environmental Sustainability (PACES), and contains a list of 27 specific objectives for the University to advance.

The University of Waterloo has made several commitments through the ESS and through the Council of Ontario Universities:

ESS Objective O1: by 2019, develop a long-term Climate and Energy Action Plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, with interim targets for 2025 and 2035
ESS Objective O2: Implement cost-effective and practical strategies to reduce or minimize growth in energy use on campus
COU 2017 pledge: by the end of 2019, develop a road map to a low carbon campus
