Statement of Requirements

This Request for Proposal (“RFP”) is an invitation to prospective Proponents to submit Proposals for the provision of up to two sets of superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors, including associated electronics and cryogenics, to perform single photon counting in experiments for quantum communication applications, quantum imaging and fundamental studies in photon entanglement. As such, it is essential that the detectors have high quantum efficiency across [including telecom industry relevant 1.5 um] a wide spectrum range, superior timing accuracy, and extremely low dark counts.

Proponents may choose to submit proposals for either one or both of the below listed equipment (Item 1 or Item 2, or Item 1 and Item 2). Proposals for Item 1 and Item 2 will be evaluated separately based on the evaluation rules and methodologies described herein; therefore, a contract may be awarded to one or two Proponents.

General Description

Item 1: Four (4) fiber-coupled superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (CFI-funded) and the associated electronics and cryogenic systems for their operation. This set of detectors will be installed at the University’s Advanced Research Complex (ARC). They must have superb quantum efficiency in a wavelength range that includes 1310 nm to 1550 nm.

This item is supporting a great project funded by Canadian Foundation for Innovation (“CFI”); therefore, offers submitted may include CFI in-kind contributions.

Item 2: Six (6) fiber-coupled superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (NRC-funded) and the associated electronics and cryogenic systems for their operation. This set of detectors will be installed at the National Research Council (NRC). They must include two (2) detectors for the range of 1000 nm to 1300 nm; two (2) detectors for the range of 1300 nm to 1600 nm; and two (2) detectors for the range of 1600 nm to 2000 nm.

This item is funded by the National Research Council (“NRC”); therefore, it is not eligible to receive offers that include CFI in-kind contributions.

It is essential that both sets detectors (Item 1 and 2) have very high efficiency across a broad bandwidth; have excellent quantum efficiency (higher than 80%); and have excellent timing accuracy with a minimal dead time and negligible dark count.

Minimum Mandatory Requirements

Item 1: Four Superconducting nanowire single-photon detection (“SNSPD”) system:
1.1 Must include four (4) superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors
1.2 Must have a helium cryostat for incorporating these detectors and a dedicated, closed loop cooling system
1.3 Cryostat must be robust enough to run continuously for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
1.4 Cryostat must be capable of running for at least 6 months before requiring a recharge of Helium (assume cryostat usage is 24/7)
1.5 Must include all components required for fiber-coupling detectors (to either SMF-28 or MMF) with >80% efficiency
1.6 The four (4) detectors must have peak efficiency >80% and at least 70% across a broad bandwidth that includes 1310 and 1550 nm wavelengths
1.7 Must have short deadtime: < 25 ns
1.8 Dark count rates must be below: ≤100 cps (1310-1550nm)
1.9 Data output must be compatible with Windows PC (e.g. communicate via USB or ethernet cable)
1.10 Must generate standard TTL output pulses (LV-TTL, TTL, or similar)
1.11 Must include software to control gating between individual SNSPD signals
1.12 Must be capable of continuous detection for data acquisition times exceeding 72 hours
2. Other Requirements
2.1 Must have fully automatic wavelength tuning.
2.2 Onsite installation and training must be included.
2.3 Must include one (1) year warranty on parts and labor.
2.4 Any devices and parts needed to control the system operation and tuning must be included. Must include all vacuum pump(s) and needed electronics to run the detectors.
3. Utilities
3.1 All components in the entire system must operate on standard Canadian power distribution / electrical supply (120V, 20A or 208V, 20A)
3.2 All electrical components must have CSA (Canadian Standards Association) certification or accepted equivalent as per Electrical Safety Authority Recognized Certification Mark at the following link: https://www.esasafe.com/electricalproducts/marks. Otherwise, the cost of inspection and certification has to be covered by the vendor.
