Background and Purpose

McMaster University, in collaboration with the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy (CCEM), has a requirement for in situ mechanical testing equipment with x-ray micro-computed tomography (XCT) analysis. This includes one system built to work with laboratory-scale XCTs housed at the CCEM, as well as one system intended for operation with the synchrotron x-ray beamline at the Canadian Light Source (CLS).

Capabilities allowing for in situ observation of materials and reactions in various dynamic conditions can greatly expand on the information made available using XCT analysis. Of particular importance for many engineering materials are the responses of the materials at various states of strain.

Mechanical testing with XCT requires the specimen to rotate within the scanner or beamline. Traditional mechanical testing designs with tubular frame support structures have critical limitations such as the placement of the sample relative to the x-ray source, interference by support tubes, and limited load capacity. To meet the needs of McMaster University and the CCEM, a system is required that can rotate the specimen within a non-rotating load frame, and maintain high resolution in the resultant XCT data by minimizing the effects of run-out and wobble. The system needs also include custom in situ furnaces that McMaster University / CCEM are having designed specifically for application in their mechanical testing systems.

The purpose of this Advance Contract Award Notice (ACAN) is to signal McMaster University’s intention to award a contract for the above-noted goods and/or services to the following pre-selected supplier:

Prior to awarding this contract, McMaster University is providing other potential suppliers with the opportunity to demonstrate that they are capable of satisfying the requirements as per this ACAN, by submitting a Statement of Capabilities Form during the posting period.

If other potential suppliers submit a Statement of Capabilities Form that meet McMaster University’s requirements as set out in the ACAN, McMaster University may proceed to a competitive procurement process.

If no other supplier submits a Statement of Capabilities Form on or before the closing date/time, a contract may be awarded to the above-noted pre-selected supplier.

Includes warranty of 12 months.
