Centennial College is responding to the requirements for growth of the Progress Campus with an addition to the existing A Block Building.
The preliminary project scope is a 6-storey building with approximately 90,000 gross square feet. The building is envisioned to be a Tall Wood Structure (TWS) with the top two or three floors housing administrative services, namely Finance, Marketing and Human Resources currently located on the lower two floors of the existing A Block building. The lower floors will provide academic programming space for programs vacating the P Block building as well as some D Block areas. Additionally, the lower floors of the new building are to accommodate part of the projected 10% growth of student population. The building due to its proximity to the Indigenous Commons area and garden space across the street should reflect the principles of indigenous values and construction principles. It will be not only the new face to the A Block building but will be the gateway to the Progress Campus and is envisioned to be a potentially iconic building structure, to further strengthen the vitality and sustainability of the College’s academic mission, faculty and student life.
The Project will be situated on the north-west side of the existing A Block building and will be developed using a Design-Build methodology where following an RFP for Design-Build Services the successful proponent, a qualified and experienced Design-Build contractor, will develop a design for the Project that is acceptable to the College and subsequently construct the Project.
Sustainability is another key focus and attribute that the College wishes this building to embody. With the increasing popularity of the use of renewable resources and technological advances with wood products, the College intends to explore the design of a Tall Wood Structure (TWS) and aims to achieve LEED Gold Standard and to achieve a net zero or positive building.
