21-8420 - Alexander School-Kipohtakaw Education Centre-Modernization and Addition

Kipohtakaw Education Centre is located on Alexander IR 134, approximately forty kilometres northwest of Edmonton, and eighteen kilometres west of Morinville. The building was first constructed in 1992, and renovated in 2017. Currently, student enrollment stands at 248 students from kindergarten to grade twelve, supported by thirty-two teachers, twenty-two assistant teachers, and seven administration and maintenance staff. Advocating their Treaty Right to Education, and with projected enrollment growth, Alexander First Nation, with the support of Indigenous Services Canada to a modernization and addition to the existing facility to meet the program needs of 379 students in 2025. This reflects a modernization of ~1,600m2 and addition of 957m2, with additional site development of school grounds. The design of the modernization and addition captures the vision of the school as it moves towards a 21st Century Learning Framework, empowering a safe, enabling, and nurturing environment for students and staff regardless of individual challenges, to provide quality education opportunities for all members of the school and larger community.
