Language competency is one of the main barriers internationally educated teachers (IETs) face to accessing Canada’s teaching profession. Therefore, it is necessary to develop training materials to help IETs succeed in meeting language competency requirements for professional teacher certification in Canada. Ensuring that IETs have fair access to free training materials in French and English will enable them to improve their results on the LCATP and, ultimately, facilitate successful application for certification in Canada.
At this time, the Corporation of the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CCMEC) requires the services of interested parties to create specialized training materials for test-takers (i.e., IETs) of the LCATP in French and English. The training content should help test-takers develop their language competencies and also familiarize them with the general pedagogies used in Canada as well as Canadian classroom culture, including the cultural competencies and context required to work with our Indigenous communities.
Note that some training material is already available to LCATP test-takers. The existing material consists of resources and information about using XpressLab, the online software platform on which the LCATP is administered. Training material currently includes:
- the Xpresslab guide;
- a demonstration module on XpressLab allowing test-takers to experience the format of the LCATP.
