P2019-0201 - West Runway Reconstruction - Feasibility Study

The Calgary Airport Authority is seeking professional services required to commission a feasibility study for the West Runway 17R – 35L Reconstruction work.

The West Runway 17R-35L was constructed more than 35 years ago.  Typical lifespan of concrete surface is 35-40 years and asphalt surface is 20 years.  To preserve the lifespan of the West Runway, asphalt overlays have been implemented several times in the past 10 years.
The condition of the subsurface of the runway is beginning to deteriorate in areas of high stress, such as the touchdown zones and areas where aircraft are turning their wheels. Overlays in these areas of high stress are lasting shorter periods of time before they begin to wear and to a point where asphalt overlays will no longer extend the life of the pavement. 
The Airport Authority is currently planning a multi-year plan for a full depth reconstruction, including removal, replacement and recompaction of base materials is required to modernize the infrastructure and offer a better service to the guests.
The purpose of the study is to determine, at any economy wide level, benefit and constructability of the new runway infrastructure to service the future of the airport and if so, to determine at a detailed level, the feasibility of, and overall plan for, proposed infrastructure development.
